That man really reminded me my dad—maybe I'm just missing him, or maybe all fathers are alike in some ways. Dad never smoked, but when he talked about Ukraine, he’d furrow his brow just the same, look deep inside himself, and from that depth he’d always say that we would definitely be happy. In this photo is a man from the village of Pavlovychi in Volhynia. The turbulent year of 1917. What was he thinking as he puffed on that pipe? But something tells me he was thinking about the same thing we are thinking about now. And yet, despite everything, life must go on. Here he is, about to exhale a thick cloud of smoke, pull his coat tighter, and head off to work.
